NZS 3604:2011 – new Qs and As

14 April 2011

Standards New Zealand has prepared a number of questions and answers (Qs and As) about the recently published NZS 3604:2011 Timber-framed buildings. We recently added some new Qs and As, which are available here.
The Qs and As provide background information on the latest edition of NZS 3604 and the limited technical review process that formed the basis of the update.

Message from your board representative - Dave Brown:

Hi All,

Before I continue I’d like you to take a moment to reflect on two events that have significantly affected our small nation.

First, spare a kind thought for the 29 miners lost on the West Coast. Our sympathies are with the families and friends of those brave souls and of course we are thinking of the many folk in Christchurch affected by the earthquake.

Our colleagues in Christchurch, and from around the country, have responded magnificently to the challenge of assisting the EQC and also helping to rebuild the shattered homes of the people down there. I‘d like to congratulate Darin Hammond, our Christchurch President, for doing such a great job coordinating the effort.
It has been a year of unpredictable workloads over the region. Some of our members have had enough work while others struggled to fill in each week. Hopefully we have seen the worst of the downturn and 2011 will herald an upward trend.

The general consensus is that people who may have earlier only planned a project are now committing to completing it. The inevitable Christmas rush is helping to fuel that trend. This positive trend from our clients should bring some solid forward work for our guys in Auckland.

If things are looking up for you why not consider taking on an apprentice. We are facing a serious skill shortage in the future if we don’t commit to bringing young people into the industry. I feel it is our obligation to help alleviate that possibility. Remember, someone gave you a chance!

2010 has been one of the better years for membership with numbers up over 110 so far. We now have 1605 Platinum members and 2237 Gold Card members, plus apprentices, and remember we are meant to be in an economic downturn!

Our training nights are getting better and better with large attendances over the region. We hope to continue this next year as we fine tune the format and add to the variety of presenters.

Personally I have had a very fulfilling year representing you at Board level and being involved in some great new initiatives for our Association. A highlight was attending the Timber Design Awards ceremony in Wellington at Te Papa on October 11.

I have really enjoyed working with Craig, our President, and the other members of your Auckland committee this year. Thank you all for your hard work and continuing commitment to CBANZ.

We have achieved a lot over 2010 and we have some really good events planned for next year. Watch this space!
A special thanks to Carol Frisby, our secretary, for her loyalty to CBANZ and relentless hard work on your behalf. What would we do without her!?

We host our annual conference in this great city next year so, all you Auckland members, please make the effort to attend. It will never be easier or cheaper to be part of a CBANZ conference for you. SKYCITY is the venue and it will be one of the best conference efforts yet. You really can’t afford to miss it! 10th - 12th June.

I think that’s enough of a rave from me. I’d like to wish all of our Auckland members a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.
Take care over the holidays and I look forward to seeing you in 2011.

Cheers
Dave Brown

Message from your regional president - Craig Atkinson:

Hello All,

Christmas is here again, and another year is nearly over.

I have been meeting with lots of new faces, but long time members working for EQC in Christchurch from Auckland
and the rest of the country - a few old face's also.

Plenty of opportunity for CBANZ members in Christchurch, building - to register or for more information visit www.eqr.co.nz

I am sure this event is going to increase work loads throughout NZ for an industry that has had a couple of very hard years.
The next question will be is there enough qualified tradesmen or a shortage?
Hopefully this will increase the apprenticeship numbers!

There has been a couple of changes to how emails are sent out, but Carol is STILL the first point of contact for Auckland.
Emails will now all be sent out from The National Support Office.

We also have a regional website page just for Auckland. You can access this from the members ONLY section of the CBANZ
website www.certified.co.nz this is where we can have postings for work needed, C.V for apprentices and much more.
Check it out regularly it another service and will depend on members input for its success.

SKYCITY for conference next year 10th - 12th June. We are hoping for a big turn out from Auckland. Whether it be for
licensing points or networking or just socialising, put the dates in your dairy - you will gain a lot for attending.

Merry Christmas & a prosperous New Year for all.

Cheers
Craig Atkinson
